Business Update

HUMBOLDT RE not to underwrite new business
as of 1 january 2021


Guernsey, 08 December 2020 – The ultimate Shareholder and the Board of Directors of Humboldt Re Ltd., a company domiciled and licensed in Guernsey since 2015, has decided to cease underwriting new business as of 1 January 2021, whilst reviewing strategic options for the ultimate shareholder to unwind its investment.

The company, a rated reinsurer, holds a security rating by A.M. Best of A– with stable outlook. In 2020, Humboldt Re has a YTD gross written premium of USD 109.3 million with total assets of USD 1,021.9 million.

The company, which is underpinned by strong risk-adjusted capital, will continue to meet all its obligations in full compliance with the applicable laws and regulations and under the supervision of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission.

Mark Elliott


Mark is Humboldt Re’s Chief Executive Officer. Previously, he held the position of Chief Underwriting Officer, sitting on both the Underwriting and Claims Committee and the Reserving Committee. Before joining Humboldt Re, he spent fifteen years in the insurance industry in a variety of underwriting and captive management roles. He holds Associateship of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII).

Kevin Sockalingum


Kevin joined Humboldt Re as Chief Actuary in early 2018. Prior to joining Humboldt Re, Kevin was Head of Capital at Newline Group and Odyssey Re, where he was responsible for capital and risk management across three entities. Kevin has also held a risk management role at Travelers and an actuarial role at Amlin plc. Kevin is qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries and holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics with Management and Finance from King’s College, London.

James Bean


James supports Adam with the underwriting and reporting activity of Humboldt Re and has been involved in the Company’s rating process and the development of Humboldt Re’s retrocession strategy. James joined Humboldt Re in early 2016 from Artex, where he was responsible for a range of captive clients. He has four years experience in the insurance industry. James obtained a BSc (Hons) in Business Studies from the University of the West of England. He has continued his education and is studying towards his advanced diploma (ACII) from the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Claims Manager, Underwriter

Darren Martin


Darren is the Claims Manager for Humboldt Re, responsible for dealing with all loss and claims activity. He is also part of the underwriting team supporting the Chief Underwriter Officer. He has almost a decade of insurance industry experience. Prior to joining Humboldt Re in December 2015 he was Assistant Claims Manager at Rossborough Insurance. There he handled claim settlements and coverage disputes on an extensive range of consumer and commercial insurance products. Darren holds the Diploma in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute and is studying towards the Advanced Diploma to become a Chartered Insurer. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters.

Catastrophe Modeller

Katie McLoughlin


Katie is a Catastrophe Modeller at Humboldt Re. Prior to joining Humboldt Re, Katie worked as a catastrophe modeller for the Lloyd’s of London syndicates Faraday for over three years and Travelers for one year. Katie has experience using SQL and has built several tools which automate the pricing process. She particularly enjoys programming and is currently enhancing her VBA and Python skills. Katie holds a BSc in Mathematics with Ocean and Climate Studies from the University of Liverpool. For her dissertation she built a model using MATLAB to mimic ocean overturning in the North Atlantic and used the model to analyse the stability of the overturning.

Paul Sykes


Paul is responsible for Aon’s insurance company management operations in Guernsey. His experience includes numerous insurance and reinsurance start-ups and directorships of the boards of life and general insurance and reinsurance companies. Paul trained in underwriting and claims with Royal Insurance before joining Aon in 1993. He was head of the White Rock Group of PCCs in 2003 and led Aon’s operations in Gibraltar and Malta from 2006. He has been Chairman of the Guernsey International Insurance Association and the Gibraltar Insurance Association, holds a Master`s degree in Corporate Governance, is a Chartered Insurer, Fellow of the CII and a Chartered Company Secretary.

Christopher Anderson


Christopher is a Guernsey advocate with an outstanding international reputation and significant experience in investment funds, insurance, reinsurance and protected and incorporated cell companies. Christopher has advised some of the world's largest private equity houses as well as new fund promoters in connection with fund establishment, investment structuring, exits and regulatory issues. He has advised the sector for more than 16 years and was recognised in the Guide to the World's Leading Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyers from 2004-2012. Chris worked with Clifford Chance in London and Clayton Utz in Sydney before locating to Guernsey in 2002, where he joined Carey Olsen as a partner in 2010.

Jeremy Arden


Jeremy has spent over 30 years in the reinsurance industry. Starting in facultative reinsurance, then treaty reinsurance (property and casualty, marine, non-marine and aviation, traditional, finite and blended), active in the seeking of reinsurance solutions using capital market securitisations, his efforts have produced business from the US, South America, Bermuda, the Middle East, Australia and Japan. Jeremy retired from Aon in 2010, having also worked for JH Minet, Sten Re and Alexander Howden. Jeremy served as an Officer in the Royal Navy (1967-1977), travelling the world in warships. He specialised in navigation and became knowledgeable about natural disasters and associated relief efforts.

Niklaus Hilti


Niklaus has more than 17 years of experience in the reinsurance/ILS industry and has been with the team since the beginning at Bank Leu in 2003. Prior to joining Bank Leu and later Credit Suisse, he spent two years at Helvetia Insurance, where he was Head of the Non-Life Reinsurance team. Prior to Helvetia, he served as Head of the Natural Catastrophe Pricing team at Converium Ltd. Niklaus holds a Master’s degree in Mathematical Physics and Meteorology from the University of Basel, Switzerland. He also conducted research into climate modelling at the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Hans-Joachim Guenther


Hans-Joachim graduated from Cologne University in economics and moved into insurance and reinsurance. He has spent more than 30 years in the risk taking and risk managing industry. Before setting up PeriStrat LLC in Zurich in 2015 he worked for Gerling Global Reinsurance in Cologne and Zug, Converium in Zurich and Endurance in Zurich at senior executive level. Since 2015 he spent almost three years as interim CUO in Singapore driving Asia Capital Reinsurance’s turn-around of their business. Across his career he has covered European and Asian markets, developing a distinct understanding of the cultural differences between global markets, and has built a strong and diverse personal network across the industry.
